Ride of Silence: A Million Powerful Memories
WE RIDE AGAIN! The Ride of Silence is an annual multi-location, international bicycle ride to commemorate cyclists killed and support those injured while riding on public roads. It helps to raise awareness among motorists, the public and decision makers of the dangers cyclists face on the roads, especially from other traffic.
In 2019, the Kingsville the Ride of Silence was sponsored by the Banded Goose Cycling Club, Movati gym and Share the Road Essex County. We had 45 riders participate with a very slow and silent bike procession through the streets of town, led by an EMS vehicle. Then Covid hit and as with most events, the Ride of Silence was cancelled. This year we are happy to announce it is scheduled again. Our goal is to have 100 riders take part, so everyone please spread the word!!
It will take place on Wednesday, May 18, starting at 7 pm sharp.
A bit of history: the first Ride of Silence was organized by Chris Phelan and held in Dallas Texas in 2003. Many participants found the experience to be very moving. Although planned as a one-time event, it has been repeated every year since then. The Ride of Silence takes place on the evening of the third Wednesday in May, at 7 pm local time. It is a silent and slow (8 km/hr) bicycle ride, about 10-13 km in length.
Cyclists in cities around the globe have joined this movement. It has grown each year, with around 400 locations participating. Most of the rides take place in the United States, but they do take place on all seven continents, including Antarctica. This year, it is expected that they will take place at 405 locations around the world, spanning 10 provinces, 44 American states, 11 countries, and 5 continents, all at precisely the same time!!
The Kingsville, cyclists will gather on Pearl St behind the Banded Goose Brewery for the 7pm (sharp!) start time. And after this solemn (but fun, because we are on bikes!) procession, we can meet back at Banded Goose for a wake-like celebration. Please mark your calendar and support this event, tell your friends and family, Any and ALL types of bicycles are welcome! Be part of a world wide event!
